Basilica of Christ the King
Dominating Antoine de Paule Square stands the Basilica of Christ the King, the largest church in the Maltese Islands and the spiritual heart of Paola. Construction began in 1924, with the church gradually taking shape through the skilled work of local stonemasons. It started serving as the parish church in 1936 and was solemnly consecrated in 1967 by Archbishop Mikiel Gonzi.
The grand basilica is renowned for its richly decorated interior, featuring gold gilding, marble altars, and a striking marble statue of Christ the King above the Blessed Sacrament altar. In 2020, the church was officially elevated to the dignity of a Minor Basilica, further highlighting its importance in Malta’s ecclesiastical heritage.
