Church of Our Lady of Victories
Dominating Naxxar’s central square is the impressive Parish Church of Our Lady of Victories, a landmark that reflects the town’s long-standing religious heritage. The present church was built between 1616 and 1630 to designs by the renowned Maltese architect Tommaso Dingli, replacing an earlier parish church dating back to the 15th century.
The interior contains a rich collection of sacred artworks, including the main painting of the Birth of the Virgin, attributed to the school of Mattia Preti, alongside paintings by Stefano Erardi and Francesco Zahra. The sacristy preserves an even older work, a wooden painting of Our Lady of the Rosary from 1595 by Gio Maria Abela. Outside, the façade features twin clocks, one real and one painted, adding a curious and distinctive detail to the church’s character.
