Town
Naxxar
Set on a wide plateau in Malta’s northern region, Naxxar is one of the island’s oldest and historically significant localities. Archaeological evidence suggests human presence here for thousands of years, with Bronze Age remains, Punic tombs, and early Christian catacombs discovered in the surrounding area.
The town’s name may derive from an ancient Maltese verb meaning “to spread out,” referring to the broad landscape it occupies, though some traditions link it to early Christian converts who followed the teachings of St Paul. Naxxar proudly carries the motto “Prior Credidi” — “First to Believe,” reflecting the belief that its inhabitants were among the first Maltese to embrace Christianity. Today the town blends historic churches, quiet residential streets, and rural outskirts dotted with old farmhouses and fields.
