Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes
The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes in Qrendi takes place on either the last Sunday of June or the first Sunday of July. It was first introduced in 1878, just two decades after the Marian apparitions in Lourdes, by the parish priest Fr Pietro Paolo Xuereb, who popularised Marian devotion among the villagers. He also founded the local Confraternity of Our Lady of Lourdes and composed the chaplet that is still recited today.
Together with his family, Fr Xuereb contributed significantly to the church’s artworks, including commissioning a papier-mâché statue of Our Lady created by sculptor Karlu Darmanin, and donating a painting still found in the sacristy. The rector of the Confraternity wears a unique medal during processions, another link to this long-standing devotion that remains central to Qrendi’s religious calendar.
