Church of Our Lady of Damascus

The Church of Our Lady of Damascus, also known as Tal-Griegi (the Greek Chapel), is a fascinating reminder of Birgu’s historic connections with the Greek Christian community. When the Knights of St John arrived in Malta in 1530, they were accompanied by Greek families from Rhodes, who brought with them their Byzantine religious traditions and sacred icons. The chapel became an important place of worship, housing the revered icon of Our Lady of Damascus, which was later transferred to Valletta in 1587. Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette is said to have offered his sword and hat before the icon in thanksgiving for victory in the Great Siege of 1565. Today, the historic chapel forms part of the Oratory of St Joseph and preserves an important chapter of Malta’s multicultural and religious heritage.

The Collachio

Collachio is a historic quarter in Birgu (Vittoriosa), Malta, centered around 19 Triq Hilda Tabone. Rather than a conventional business, it is a preserved heritage area best known as the medieval heart of Birgu and for its close association with the Knights of St. John. Today it is one of the town's most recognizable places for walking, architecture, and photography
