Rabat
Located just outside the old capital Mdina’s fortified walls, the town of Rabat often gets overshadowed by its historic neighbour. But take a closer look, and you’ll find a town rich in charm and heritage. Winding up from Telgħa tas-Saqqajja into the village core, Rabat offers a mix of traditional townhouses, colourful gallariji (wooden balconies), and a relaxed café and restaurant culture with both modern eateries and old-school snack bars.
The town centre is home to several historic sites, and you’ll quickly notice the strong sense of local pride with many families here tracing their roots back generations. Some still work in nearby farmland or operate the horse-drawn karozzini that serve tourists visiting Mdina, keeping traditions alive in a town that quietly celebrates the Malta of years gone by.
