Our Lady of Sorrows Church

The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows is the historic religious landmark from which the town of Pietà takes its name. The first chapel on the site dates to the late 16th or early 17th century, built near a cemetery used during the devastating plague of 1592–1593. Originally dedicated to St Roch, the patron saint invoked against plague, the church was later rededicated to Our Lady of Sorrows after the establishment of a nearby Augustinian convent.

The present Baroque-style building dates largely from themid-18th century reconstruction funded by benefactors including the knight Wolfgang Philip von Guttenberg. Over the centuries the church served not only as a place of worship but also as a meeting place during historical events such as the Rising of the Priests in 1775.
